A Quiet Strength

January 4th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Seeing as the football playoffs are about to start I thought it would be good to recap a book I have been wanting to write about for a while. If you haven’t yet read Tony Dungy’s book, Quiet Strength, I highly suggest you pick it up.

I am not an overly religious person so I was a little skeptical about how this would read, meaning I was afraid it might be “preachy”. But it wasn’t, it was an interesting look at how Coach Dungy got to where he is today and how his faith helped keep him even keeled throughout his life as a coach and mentor.

One of the most interesting things that I found was how little time he spent talking about the Super Bowl year. Most of the book talked about his days growing up in Michigan, going to the University of Minnesota and his days in Tampa Bay with the Bucs, which seemed to be the majority of the book. It almost seemed as the Super Bowl was glossed over. I realized when I was done reading that it was intentional. His life, and he points this out many times in the book, is about more than just being a football coach. His life is about his tragedies, the people he has touched and the lives that have been changed because of position as a leader and mentor. The Super Bowl happened because of all of those things and because he faced them all with great dignity and great perseverance.

Quiet Strength is a good quick read and really makes you appreciate the type of man that Coach Dungy is, and the type of team he is leading…and that is tough to say, being a Packer fan!

I am currently reading When Pride Still Mattered, a book about the Great Vince Lombardi, so be on the lookout for a review of that soon.

I think my wife has distributed that book to 10 or 15 people to date. But she never gave me one. May be time to buy one more.

And, congrats on the new blog.

After years and year of watching major sports like football, I need a break. I found this sport to be a little more macho than football. Give it a look. http://youtube.com/watch?v=KylUHdDXuCg
