Fox is Killing The BCS

January 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Some of you may think that the BCS needs to die anyway, but in terms of presentation Fox is doing its best job to kill it with their lousy pre-game announcers and their in-game crews.

I consider ESPN/ABC with their GameDay Crew of Lee Corso, Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit, and the ABC Crew of John Saunders, Doug Flutie and Craig James, to be the best in the business. Granted Corso is often a caricature of himself and sometimes a little over-the-top, but their knowledge of the game and the insight they provide is great. Even the ABC crew is very good and usually can be counted on to provide some good commentary at halftime of a game.

Fox does a very good NFL broadcast but just loses it in the college game. Fox’s answer, which seems to be their formula for most of their sports broadcasts, is to throw up as many graphics and sounds, and shiny stuff to distract the viewer from the announcers. Well, it isn’t working. Fox rolls out Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer and Fran Tarkenton? Jimmy and Barry seem more interested in comparing their records than actually analyzing the game. The cast gives you the feel that they were kind of just thrown together and are there to get paid, not because they actually care.

Even in the booth, the announcers for all the BCS games has been god awful. When Darryl Johnston is the best guy you have in the booth, you know you are in for a long game.

I think the main issue is that Fox simply tries to emulate their NFL coverage to the NCAA game, which just doesn’t cut it. ESPN and ABC get the pageantry and the tradition of College Football and can translate that into great coverage…Fox…shiny thing, loud noise, shiny thing.

For all the money that Fox paid to obtain the rights for the BCS games, minus the Rose Bowl, you would think that they would assemble a cast that actually knows and understands the College game, but, I guess that would be too much to ask.

Oh, and for my money, I think that Todd Blackledge is probably the best analyst in the booth today, check him out next year.
