I wanted to take a day to write this for a few reasons. The first because I wanted to make sure it wasn’t a joke, the second well, because I have to admit, it was a little heart breaking. I wrote a post about Favre during the playoffs so I won’t go on and on about how great he was. Rather, I just wanted to say thank you.
Thank you for playing the game the right way. Playing it like it was a game and not a job. I don’t like to say that athletes are heroes because I think that is dramatic, but I do want to say thank you for being inspirational. An inspiration not because you played a game but you because you played through the pain and joys that all of us experience in our everyday lives. Because no matter what you showed up and you played. No excuses and no exceptions.
We teach our kids to strive for perfection and that perfection is the only way to get to the top. But you weren’t perfect. You weren’t the best every Sunday. And that showed us that sometimes you can not be perfect and still be spectacular. You were an everyman and extraordinary in the same breath and that’s why we’ll miss you.
The game and the people who play it will continue, but a little of the spirit will retire with you. We can accept the end, we may not like it, but we can accept it, because you gave us a great show and someone real to root for. So thank you #4 for letting us experience our inner child every Sunday and for you doing the same.
