My previous post about the NHL was partly formed because I am a fan of the game and I wanted to point out some flaws that I saw, as a fan of the sport, not one specific team, and how I see the league failing its fans.
One of the things that got me thinking about that post was that I don’t have a favorite team in the NHL. I like to watch the Blackhawks and the Avalanche but really can’t call myself a true “fan” of either. I love the sport, and so I think my perspective is different than someone who follows one specific team. The same with Baseball. I most closely watch the Cubs and have found myself a bigger fan within the last five years or so, mostly because my wife is a lifelong Cubs fan and we’ve had fun following them together since we got married. I will watch most teams and will watch pretty much any game I can just because I think the game itself is great.
So, does it matter if you don’t have a horse in the race, or if all of the horses are equal? Does it make you less of a fan if you don’t identify with one team, does it make you more or less of a fan?
What are your thoughts, what kind of fan are you? Would you rather paint your face and go crazy for one team or is it more fun being a fan of the sport? Is one fan better than the other?

I think it’s easy to be both a fan of an entire sport and a face painter. I’m passionate about the NHL, but more specifically about the Avalanche. One is part of a greater whole that cannot exist without the other parts.
