Before lessons you should get a video on golf, like a demonstration. Then you should get lessons so you won't be totally lost when you go to them. If you live near a driving range, go there often to improveyour skills.

go for it im 13 and im still working on everything. When your chipping and driving bring your club toward your front foot. For chipping this will help you to chip the ball in the air then roll slowly and for driving it will help you keep the ball nice and straight. Lastly dont swing to fast this will cause it either to slice youll be surprised

For the driver look into getting a big bertha its the best driver ever but its expensive

for your clubs : check out eBay and then head to golfreview.com for each set of clubs to see what other people think about them and for everything else.... start buying magazines, videos, and looking at websites like golftipsmag.com golf.com and learnaboutgolf.com for instructions and tips... other than taking lessons which is highly recommended, you can get tons of useful info on stuff from sand bunkers to putting help from these sites and mags.

forget Walmart and shop for used stuff on ebay... iron set, driver, putter, fairway woods, all for under 300 bucks.

I don't mean to be rude, but almost all of these answers are textbook ' I just read Golf Digest' answers.

IMHO, I think you need to just hit the ball however the heck you feel for about 3 months.

After that, you can ask an expert about your faults, etc. (After you've had a chance to DEVELOP faults)

Equipment will do absolutely nothing for you at this point. I'd stick with your dad's clubs for now (They're probably better than any new stuff anyways :)

Lots of chipping & pitching, ( putting helps the score too, )
expand on the shorter strokes after you get them on plane,
functioning properly. You get all this going with 4 or 5 clubs,
PGA Professional of 35 years.

Buy nicer irons then a driver, short game consist of 90% of the game so getting fitted for nice irons is the way to go.

If you are interested in learning the basics there is an excellent book you might want to check out.

"Ben Hogan's Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf"

It is a step-by-step guide to the golf swing. The book covers everything from the grip to swing while providing great illustrations to make the concepts easy to understand. It will be the best $15 dollars you ever spent.

One more thing, if you are going to go to Kmart and spend money for a new set of clubs, you might want to go to a golf shop and get fitted for a custom set. It wouldn't cost that much more. Having the correct club to fit your swing does make a difference. A pair of golf shoes will come in handy when you start to develop a consistent swing.

Good Luck

your grip should be hard only with the last three fingers of your left hand(if your righty) the rest of your grip should be firm enough to not allow slippage but not tight (think of trying to grip an egg...firm but not hard enough to break it)

golfing consistently has more to do with whats goin on in your head than anything else...how many points are you able to make sure you have correct everytime you swing...

taking the stance...bending the knees...eyes on the ball...head down...left arm straight...active wrists at top...swing round the hips...accelerate through the swing...

any and everytime i have a bad swing after a good one...i have missed one of those key components to my swing...

a lil mental trick i have used well with my shots now is to imagine myself taking the perfect practice swing...only there is the ball in the way...seems to take a bit of the edge off of my mind and concentration...

ps also...it could be that you try to kill the ball rather than hit it...by doig this you wil have a phenominal hit a few times, but overall your consistency will suffer
