When golfing your entire focus needs to be on the shot at hand and visualizing how you are going to play the hole you are on. The best golfers don’t get wrapped up in thinking about previous shots excellent or terrible. I reflect one of my favorite quotes about professional athletes is that they must have small memories, they are able to forget about terrible shots, or excellent shots, and focus on conquering what is right in front of them.

Try your best not to worry. Try to place all your view into the next shot and how you are going to play the rest of the hole. And just something to place your mind at ease when playing in a tournament, it’s never over till it’s over. I remember a few years ago Phil Mickelson had a 5 stroke lead going to the 18th hole (par 5) and tried to reach it in two and flew it over and hit the clubhouse, then he tried it again and etc.. he ultimately finished up taking a 11 and lost. So just remember anything can happen. So next time in a tournament just try to remember that. :-)

In my opinion, this is what separates the greats from the not-so-greats. Life able to control the mental aspects of your game to do quality shots. Focusing on score equates to a sports team looking ahead to next weeks opponent rather than focusing on this weeks opponent. Looking ahead will cause you to miss what is right in front of you now.
Everyone is different, a trick I use is to try and focus on a particular swing plotting. I replay that plotting over and over in my mind. I try to keep the view of fundamentals of my swing down to basics. Too many swing view clog the mind. If you trust that your basic swing plotting will produce a quality shot each time, then your score will take care of its self. Hope this help. Excellent luck!

What you need to do is have a excellent breakfast.

1st tee you need look at the fairway, all the distress and weigh out your options and be confident about your selections. Choose something that will surely get you in a playable position. Focus on your shot, the outcome and how you have the ability to recover from a missed shot. Confidence is everything. Excellent golfers have fantastic focus, choice making and small term memory.

i am 41 years ancient and have played golf for a long time . i have come to this conclusion a bit late but i always thaught more practice adds up to lower scores. here is some truth to this but i can tell you this! your mental game can and will drop your scores by 10 strokes in 18 holes if you havent thaught about it until now. find the book THE GOLFER’s MIND , PLAY TO PLAY GREAT by Dr. Bob Rotella… this book is under 200 pages of simple conception and no crappy usless stuff .. this book will show you the way!!! im telltale you this… i was always for the last 20 years in the 80s and sometimes 90s i didnt change my swing i didnt hit the range i didnt do much of anything diferent… my scores dropped consistantly by 8-10 strokes per round ! yes golf is 50% mental and 50% PHYSICAL.. I CANT WAIT TO PRACTICE A BIT MORE AND GET DOWN TO SCRATCH , the game will get much simpler when you get the mental part fixed.. FIND THE BOOK it will take you about 5 hours to read.. amaizing .

Here is only one way to overcome the mental game. You must train yourself to look only at the shot you are about to play, whether it is the initial drive or the last shot to the green. Once you start thinking you are doomed. This is one sport where you ” Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.”

It is hard, but you need to just focus on the shot you need to hit at the time. Concentrate on that, do the shots, and the score will take care of itself. When you go out to practice, don’t even take a scorecard with you. Just hit each shot the best you can, and then after the round review in your mind and see what you shot. You might be surprised how well you did.

You cannot do anything about a hole you’ve played all ready. You have to focus on each shot. Rule of thumb in golf is if you hit more excellent shots on a hole than terrible shots, you’ll have a decent score. I tend to play terrible when I play quick. Of course you have to maintain a decent pace of play, but you can slow your plotting process down and still maintain pace of play. Focus on one shot at a time.
