Because golf like tennis is considered ‘a gentleman’s game’ because only people with money can play it and it is so pricey to play because you have to have proper shoes and clubs and pay huge fees to play on excellent courses. Therefore rich people only want well dressed people on the greens and the courts.

I don’t reflect “posh” is the right word, more like “preppy”. I suppose it’s just based on tradition. Also, golf is played at country clubs. Country clubs can be very particular about attire and have point dress codes (no t-shirts, halters, etc). I take advantage of the dress code in golf because most sports have to wear a unadorned standardized (shorts and a t-shirt). So, it’s fun to be able to dress “stylishly” and still play the sport you like.

well it may just be a game but it is a fancy game and it isn’t required but you should reflect about it

Here are many courses with no dress code. I personally play golf in jeans and a sleeveless t-shirt all the time, because I go to cheap courses for a relaxing, recreational game. Nice courses and country clubs seek to attract wealthy people with the entire atmosphere surrounding the golf course. Many of them have fancy restaurants and banquet halls for hosting formal events such as weddings. In order to maintain the high-class atmosphere, they apply a dress code.

Its no different than a high-end restaurant with a dress code. Most restaurants don’t care, but the fancy pricey ones have a dress code. Golf is the same way.

You can wear bermuda length shorts (cargo shorts are typically fine) and a collared shirt.

    That’s sweet simple.

If that’s too hard…don’t play golf. Do something else.

It’s part of the game. Accept it. Or don’t.

  • Flatstick:

You don’t have to wear nice clothes while playing, but each course has their own guidelines. The fact is I find that I play better when I am dressed “properly” so don’t knock it until you have tried it.

  • Alex:

I’ll place it to you straight. Golfers are very posh, in a nutshell. The dress code is all to do with etiquette. Its probably encouraged considering it mostly elderly people that go. I’ve gone to a country club and it’s basically got elderly people and their really caught up in the whole posh, up-to-scratch standard thing

  • Tom on Tour:

The man who speaks well does well…. The man who dresses well does even better,,,lol

  • Bob P:

Well, if you call a shirt with sleeves and collar posh… anyway, I”m a working guy and I prefer to look decent on the golf course. It”s like a special time when I”m out here, so I try to treat it that way.

Find a further Golf course, stay away from the snobs with string through their butts. Life is too small to worry about proper clothes at a fucking golf course. Its fucken dirt with nicley groomed grass and all sorts of critters and crap underneath. Reflect about it. Its just of bunch of excellent ancient boys having their way with society, our rights, and freedoms. Bush plays Golf while out troops die! This is sopposed to be America, dont ever be satisfied with something because “thats the way it is!” You dont have to accept it. Fight the status Quo. Golf is a game, a fucking game. Your standing in society should not matter when you are playing a game!
